Note:

Architecture is a highly entrepreneurial profession.  Architects are project oriented and must be able to juggle the management and finances involved in numerous projects going on at any one time as well as the clients and all of the professionals (ex.: engineers, lawyers), government agencies, and trades people involved in each project.  Architects must also be constantly taking on new projects so as to remain employed as other projects are completed.  It is advisable to do a dual degree or a major or a minor in Business Management or Business Administration, with a concentration in construction if possible.

An apprenticeship or architecture degree program will not be sufficient to learn all of the marketing, advertising, networking, legalities and accounting issues involved to sustain a profitable long-term architecture business as well as plan for personal retirement and the expected personal expenses such as future children's college tuition and expenses.

Architecture is a stress inducing profession.  Many people do not understand the profession or what they are paying for when they engage an architect.

It is tantamount to stay abreast of all of the products, methodologies, and technical advancements in the field, which is a monumental, time-consuming task.

The US Government's Occupational Outlook Handbook (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/) will help you find architect career information on duties, education and training, pay, and outlook for it and hundreds of other occupations.  Please be sure you understand what is the average income for the profession in the area you intend to work as well as the future number of professionals needed for the area.  The profession is known for its high burnout rate and bankruptcies.  Architectural work is closely tied to economic fluctuations.

Please take all of these issues into consideration as you construct the educational background you will need to succeed in architecture.

When reviewing the list below, be aware of the three paths to a professional degree.

Three Main Educational Paths to a Professional Degree

In general, three types of programs lead to an accredited, professional degree. All professional degrees meet similar minimal standards, including professional requirements and general education courses.

Professional Master of Architecture programs may cause some confusion to readers, because individuals enter an M. Arch program with a variety of educational credentials, and hence with varied paths ahead to graduation. In many cases, schools in thie guide list multiple paths to the M. Arch programs. In other cases, a school may list only one M. Arch degree, even though it admits students on multiple paths.

Following are three common paths for professional architectural education.

5 year programs (B. Arch or M. Arch)

These are five-year professional degree programs, typically for undergraduates, with approximately 30% of the curriculum devoted to the humanities and electives. Since 1995, some B. Arch. programs have made a transition to a five-year M. Arch package. In most cases, high school graduates enter the program as a freshmen.

4 + 2 Programs

These programs grant a pre-professional degree (majoring in architecture or environmental design) after four years, followed by a two-year program of intense study leading to a Master of Architecture (M. Arch) professional degree.

The four-year pre-professional degree, where offered, is not an accredited professional degree. The pre-professional degree is useful for those wishing a foundation in the field of architecture, as preparation for either a professional degree program or employment options in architecturally related areas.

3-Year (or 3  Year) Graduate Programs (M. Arch or D. Arch)

These graduate programs are professional degree graduate programs for students holding a four-year undergraduate degree in any subject matter.

There are two lists below:

1) Institutions with NAAB Accredited Architecture Degree Programs (BArch, MArch, OR DArch).  Many also have undergraduate preprofessional programs that allow candidates to pursue graduate studies in architecture related to the study of architecture;

2) Institutions with undergraduate programs only in architecture that could lead to the professional Master of Architecture degree.

As always, you will want to double-check this information.  If you have additional questions, you are encouraged to contact Dr. Architecture also visit the ARCHCareersGuide.com.
