Real Estate Degree

Page history last edited by Shelley 7 years, 4 months ago

As of 2017, according to the College Board, there are 262 American colleges offering real estate degrees of varying lengths: Associate, Bachelor of Arts, Masters, Doctoral.  The most common is a two year associate degree.

You do NOT need any degree to get into or practice real estate.  It is considered a trade profession.

Each state has its own rules and regulations as to when and for what type of activity you need a real estate license.  They will list classes, if any, and costs.

You do not have to be an American citizen to get a real estate license in many states, CT and NY are current examples.

You do not have to be American to own land or property with very few restrictions.

Check with your particular state of interest for rules and regulations.

Individuals interested in becoming real estate brokers must first work between 1 and 3 years as a sales agent, the exact number of which is dependent on the individual's state of operation's laws. Brokers are licensed to manage their own business, assisting others in the sale or purchase of homes as well as maintaining properties, such as apartment buildings, if needed by a client.

Currently the job market for real estate depends upon which aspect of it you are in: appraisal, Realtor, sales/rental agent, facilities manager, builder, developer, owner.  Overall it is expected to grow steadily, though unlike some other professions, real estate is highly dependent on the market. In times of boon job opportunities are to be had as people are more prone to purchasing and improving or building properties. During recessions or stagnation, people are less likely to leading to cutbacks and limited job opportunities. That said, real estate is an easy profession to enter.

The 2017 average salary for a real estate agent is approximately $40,000 per year. The average salary for a real estate broker is approximately $55,000 per year.

The U.S. Federal Government's Occupational Outlook Handbook (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/) lists professions' current and future earnings potential with lists of work attributes and related fields.
