As with the case of other "how comfortable will this community be for me" questions, the best tack to take might be to encourage students to do their own assessment of the relative "friendliness" of a given school.

 

One resource that might come in handy is the website of the National Consortium of Directors fo LGBT Resources in Higher Education... this will give you links directly to the offices on campuses that are responsible for supporting the LGBT community there.
