Reality Check - SAT score ranges of matriculants

REALITY CHECK – SAT RANGE, 25TH-75TH PERCENTILE

FOR ENROLLED STUDENTS

AT VARIOUS SELECTIVE UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES NATIONWIDE

Data provided by Cigus Vanni, based on college Class of 2017 (entered college fall 2013) and including only those students who ENROLLED at each individual school, NOT all students who applied NOR all students who were accepted.

Those schools that reported all three sections of the SAT for The Common Data set are in italics.  Otherwise, numbers in brackets are PROJECTED SAT totals for three scales, calculated by doubling the Critical Reading section and adding this to the Math section.  Normative data released by The College Board in summer 2012 indicated that the average score for students on the Writing section of the SAT is 488 nationwide.  This is roughly commensurate with the national average for Critical Reading (496); consequently, the extrapolation of Writing scores to form a three part total is based on the assumption that the range of Writing results will be parallel to the range of scores from the Critical Reading section.

SOURCES:  The Common Data Set 2013-14, The College Board; school websites

##  -- indicates that submission of SAT/ACT is OPTIONAL; OR students may submit tests OTHER THAN ACT/SAT; OR tests are required/not required only for certain subgroups in the applicant pool; OR tests need not be submitted if certain specified GPA level is attained (be sure to check with individual admissions office!)

++ -- indicates gain of forty (40) points or more at either 25% or 75% gate level when compared with figures from scores of college Class of 2016

Please recall that these figures are standardized test ranges—they are NOT “cut-off” scores or lines of demarcation.  Please also recall that standardized testing is never the most important aspect of college admissions—they are not unimportant but they are not the end-all and be-all of acceptance.  These figures do not imply or infer in any fashion whether a student will be accepted or denied at the schools to which s/he applies.  And remember—if you have specific or more detailed questions or concerns, call the admissions office(s) of the college(s) to which you apply!

But here's a question: why are these data for the class that just finished its first year—and not for the actual incoming class??  Well, that’s because colleges and universities are not required to report the scores for entering classes until several months into spring semester.  Many schools admit entering/ first-year students for the spring semester—consequently, their test results are not available until more than halfway through the school year.  Without these results data would be incomplete/inaccurate (aren’t you glad you asked?).
